New Alberta Gaming Research Institute Newsletter

The latest issues of the Institute's Research Reveals... newsletter is Volume 4, Issue 2. Included is an item relating to the upcoming conference in Edmonton (March 31st & April 1st) as well as an article about the origins of casino gambling in the Province of Alberta.

Practice Guidelines for Treating Gambling-Related Problems

Here's an item that appears particularly valuable for clinicians treating problem gambling clients... "Massachusetts Department of Public Health’s Practice Guidelines for Treating Gambling-Related Problems: An Evidence-Based Treatment Guide for Clinicians" (2004, January). It was authored by D. A. Korn and H. J. Shaffer.

Eighteenth-Century Ideas about Gambling [Paper]

Justine Crump of the Centre for History and Economics, King's College, University of Cambridge has authored the paper "The perils of play: Eighteenth-century ideas about gambling" (2004, April). In it, she examines some of the ideas associated with gambling in eighteenth-centure Britain and considers the way in which contemporary writings characterized the perils of play.

More Newfoundland Resources

The report VLT Gambling in Newfoundland and Labrador (2005, January) was produced by Renee Ryan of the Addictions Treatment Services Association.

In addition, the 2004 Report of the Auditor General - Summary contains a section on Gambling Rehabilitation Services that shows how much VLTs generated for the province as well as difficulties associated with the identification and treatment of gambling problems.

Newfoundland & Labrador Announce Plans for Prevalence Study

In a January 25th, 2005 news release, Health and Community Services Minister John Ottenheimer announced that the provincial government will proceed with a prevalence study to measure gambling and problem gambling in Newfoundland and Labrador. Stock Market Involvement [Description]

A Study of Heavy Stock Market Involvement is the name of a research investigation being undertaken by Richard Govoni and Robert Mann. The purpose of this study is to develop an understanding or preliminary model of heavy involvement in the stock market, particularly day and futures trading, that is based on the actual experiences of market participants.

The Auckland Report

The Auckland Report - A Review of Research on Aspects of Problem Gambling (2004, October) was commissioned by the Responsibility in Gambling Trust [U.K.]. It was authored by gambling researchers Abbott, Volberg, Bellringer, and Reith. It contains a number of excellent recommendations for future investigations into gambling. A shorter summary report is also available.

Several new gambling reports from the Harvard Project on American Indian Economic Development can be accessed from their web site. The Alberta Alcohol and Drug Abuse Commission (AADAC) has issued a news release that mentions the opening of a residential treatment program for problem gamblers at the AADAC Northern Addictions Centre (NAC) in Grande Prairie, Alberta.
